OMAHA, Neb. – Nebraska native Ethen Frank netted two goals, including his second of the night with 13.7 seconds left to give No. 8 Western Michigan a 4-3 road win at Omaha at Baxter Arena on Friday night.
WMU (16-8-1, 9-5-1-1 NCHC) was awarded a power play with 37.7 seconds remaining after Dawson DiPietro got hit in the face by Nate Knoepke while crossing the blue line. After the Mavericks cleared off the faceoff the Broncos brought it back into their zone. Josh Passolt found Hugh McGing in the left circle and McGing dished the puck through the slot to Frank in the right circle. Frank, who hails from Papillion just a few miles outside of Omaha, fired the puck off the right post and into the net for his 13th goal of the season. WMU then killed off the remaining time with Colt Conrad hitting the post on an empty-net.
Western Michigan was in a 2-0 hole after Taylor Ward tallied on the power play just 4:32 into the second period. Luke Bafia got the Broncos on the board at 10:08 with a power play goal to cut the lead to 2-1. Conrad pulled UNO goalie Evan Weninger to his side of the ice and passed it to Bafia in the right circle. Bafia fired it into an empty net for his career-high third goal of the season. Conrad's assist was his 18th of the season with Corey Schueneman also tallying an assist on the goal.
The Broncos tied it up at 18:20 in the second on DiPietro's fourth of the season. Conrad dished it up to Wade Allison and the Broncos had a 2-on-1. Allison placed the perfect pass across the slot to DiPietro for the tap-in and his fourth goal of the season. Allison picked up his third assist of the season, while Conrad added to his team-best helper total with his 19th. Conrad now sits just two points shy of reaching 100 for his career.
Frank netted his first goal of the night with just 0.3 seconds to go in the second period to give WMU its first lead of the game. McGing had the puck behind the net and centered it. Lawton Courtnall tipped the puck to Frank and he ripped it into the net for his 12th of the season.
Omaha's Tavis Kothenbuetel took advantage of a bouncing loose puck and beat Trevor Gorsuch with 5:13 remaining in the third period to tie it up at 3-3 before Frank's game-winner.
Gorsuch made 27 saves on the night to pick up his 14th win of the season. The Broncos outshot the Mavericks 36-30 and finished 2-for-4 on the power play.
