OSTRAVA, Czech Republic – Western Michigan sophomore defenseman Mattias Samuelsson has been named captain of the 2020 United Stats National Junior Team for the upcoming International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships, as announced by USA Hockey.
Samuelsson is one of five returnees from last year's silver-medal winning team, in which he played in every game. The Buffalo Sabres' draft pick has played in 12 games this season, recording four points on one goal and three assists with a +3 plus/minus. Samuelsson had appeared in 47 games in his career with 16 points on six goals and 10 assists.
He is the first player in WMU hockey history to captain a national team at the World Junior Championships.
USA open the tournament with its first preliminary matchup on Thursday, Dec. 26 against Canada at 1 p.m. ET. The NHL Network will be providing live coverage of all USA's games.
