CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference has released its 2019 men's soccer all-conference awards, with five members of the Western Michigan men's soccer team earning recognition.
Freshman midfielder
Charlie Sharp, senior defender
Sam Biek and freshman midfielder
Brennan Creek have been named to the All-MAC First Team for their regular season efforts.
Sharp was also named the MAC Freshman of the Year, joining defender Reese Richardson as the only two Bronco players to win the award in program history, with Richardson earning the honor in 2000.
Charlie appeared in all 18 games this season for WMU, leading his team with seven goals and 16 points. His seven goals tied him for second overall in the MAC and his 16 points tied him with Rodrigo Robles Grajera of West Virginia for the conference freshmen scoring race. Sharp had an outstanding October, recording points for the Broncos in six consecutive matches. He was named the MAC Player of the Week on October 15, after scoring a game winning goal at Oakland.
Biek, a native of Marburg, Germany, started all 18 matches for the Broncos in the backfield. The NAIA graduate transfer led all WMU defenders with three goals on the season, which included the game winner against Green Bay in September. Sam helped his team hold opponents to only one goal per game, which ranks second in the MAC behind Bowling Green.
Creek made an appearance in every match for Western Michigan in his inaugural collegiate season, which included 16 starts. The midfielder from Kalamazoo collected six assists, tying fellow freshman
Max Keenan for the team lead and third overall in the MAC. He added three goals, with his total of 12 points ranking him fourth for the Broncos in scoring. Brennan scored his first career goal in a 4-0 victory over Niagara.
Western Michigan also landed two spots on the All-MAC Second Team, with senior midfielder
Anthony Bowie and redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Isaac Walker picking up honors.
Bowie contributed six goals and 14 points over 17 starts, ranking him behind only Sharp in both categories for the Broncos. He is tied with SIU Edwardsville's Jorge Gonzalez for the conference lead in game winning goals, recording four during the 2019 campaign. The Grand Rapids native earned both MAC Player of the Week and National Team of the Week accolades twice this season.
Walker was outstanding in net for Western Michigan this season, earning a 9-2-2 record in 15 starts. Those nine victories have him tied for fourth in program history for single season wins. His .858 goals against average and .780 save percentage both lead the MAC.
Western Michigan will take on West Virginia in a MAC semifinal contest tomorrow in Akron, with the first kick scheduled for 3 p.m.
