Men’s Basketball Defeats Milwaukee in Triple Overtime Classic

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – In what will surely go down as one of the more memorable victories in program history, the Western Michigan men's basketball defeated Milwaukee, 115-110 in a triple overtime classic on Saturday night inside UWM Panther Arena.

In the triple OT thriller junior guard Michael Flowers put on a performance that Bronco fans surely won't forget scoring a career-high 34 points to go along with seven three-pointers, the third most in a single-game in school history.

Flowers came through in the clutch three separate times to secure the victory as the Southfield, Mich., native knocked down a three-pointer at the end of regular to send it to overtime, another one to send it to double overtime and a third to push the game to a third overtime. It's the first game to go past overtime since posting a double overtime win over Ball State back on Jan. 14, 2015.

Flowers was one of six Broncos to score in double figures against the Panthers, the first time WMU has had at least five players in double figures since Dec. 22, 2018 versus Milwaukee. The 225 combined points from WMU and Milwaukee is the second highest combined score in school history.

Redshirt junior Brandon Johnson posted a double-double against the Panthers with a career-high 21 points and career-high 15 rebounds. Johnson played 46 minutes in the triple OT classic and went 6-of-15 from the field and 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. Johnson also had four blocks becoming the first Bronco since Drake Lamont back on Feb. 2, 2017 to do so.

Redshirt sophomore Jason Whitens poured in a career-high 15 points to go along with nine rebounds in 40 minutes of action. The duo of senior Jared Printy and sophomore William Boyer-Richard each had 11 on the night while freshman B. Artis White had 10 points along with three rebounds and two assists.

As a team the Broncos shot 44.8 percent from the field, 40 percent from long distance and 78.9 percent from the free-throw line. The Broncos were 45-of-57 from the free-throw line, the most free-throws made and attempted in a single-game in school history.

With the victory Western Michigan improves its overall record to 2-0, marking the first time since 2014 WMU has started a season 2-0. The Broncos return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 12 for a match-up against Mississippi Valley State. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. inside University Arena.

It was a sloppy start for both teams to begin the first half as WMU and Milwaukee combined to commit five turnovers in the first three minutes of action. Midway through the first half, Western Michigan held Milwaukee without a field goal for nearly five minutes as the Broncos made five of their next six field goals to take an 18-16 lead with 9:53 to go.

Late in the first half after a Johnson lay-up, the Broncos extended their led to 41-26 with one minute remaining thanks to a 9-0 run. However, Milwaukee ended the half on a 7-3 run as WMU took a 44-33 lead into the locker room.

In the second half the Panthers continued to chip away at the Bronco lead as WMU continued to battle and hold a 60-54 lead with 10:57 remaining. The Milwaukee defense came to life during the final 10 minutes of the second half as WMU was held without a field goal until 15.5 seconds remaining in the game as Milwaukee held a 76-73 lead. It was then that Flowers hit the first of his clutch three-pointers dribbling left and knocking down a three to tie the game at 76-76.

In the first overtime the two teams went back and forth before Milwaukee extended its lead to 85-82 with 30 seconds left after two made free-throws. However, it was Flowers' once again one dribbled to the left side and falling into the stands knocked down a three to send the game to a second overtime.

Milwaukee raced out of the gate to begin the second overtime and grabbed a 94-89 lead with 2:10 remaining after back-to-back Bronco turnovers. Late in the second OT the Broncos capitalized on Milwaukee missed free-throws and embarked on a 4-0 run to trail by one with 26 seconds remaining.

After two made free-throws from Milwaukee, Flowers had the ball in his hands once again and delivered for the Brown & Gold with another three-point from the right wing to tie the game at 102-102 and force a third overtime.

In the third overtime the Broncos began to pull away as steal from sophomore Adrian Martin that resulted in a fast break lay-up from sophomore William Boyer-Richard extended WMU's lead to three with 2:30 to play. To secure the game, WMU made its final six free-throws en route to the 115-110 victory.
