Broncos Post Second Straight Win with a 1-0 Upset

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over #22 Loyola Marymount at the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon in the first ever meeting between the schools. The Broncos, who were celebrating Alumni Weekend, improve to 6-4 on the year and have now won two straight matches, following their road win against Xavier on Tuesday. Western Michigan now leads the Mid-American Conference in shutout victories with five during the 2019 season.

"Credit to our guys on the day as they found a way to beat a top 25 team," said head coach Chad Wiseman. "It was a great way to cap off a very fun and successful Alumni Weekend event. I want to thank all of the alumni (over 100) that were on campus this weekend. I hope that they enjoyed the social on Friday, the golf outing on Saturday and the victory today. This event proves that Bronco nation is unified and strong."

The Broncos spent most of the first half on the attack offensively, registering four shots on goal and allowing the Lions no quality scoring opportunities.

Senior forward Anthony Bowie scored the game winner for Western Michigan in the 16th minute, putting away a rebound off of the Loyola Marymount goalkeeper following a shot attempt by freshman Charlie Sharp. Sharp and senior defender Paul Liagre were credited with the assists, with Liagre earning his first point of the season. Bowie also scored the lone tally against the Musketeers on Tuesday and continues to lead his team with five total goals.

"On today's goal Bowie left no doubt, burying it in the back of the net," stated Wiseman.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Isaac Walker made some key saves in the second half to secure his second clean sheet in a row for the Broncos.

"Give credit to our backline and Walker in goal," Wiseman remarked. "Those guys were solid and worked well as a unit to stop opportunities for LMU before they became dangerous. I really enjoyed watching our leadership take over in the last fifteen minutes as they took responsibility and showed a lot of mental toughness."

Western Michigan will now head east to face in-state opponent Oakland in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday evening.
