WMU Continues MAC Play on the Road

KALAMAZOO, Mich.  –  Western Michigan volleyball hits the road for the first time during Mid-American Conference play this weekend, Oct. 4-5 to square off with west division foes Toledo and Ball State.

Scouting the Broncos
Western Michigan has an overall record of 10-4, 1-1 in MAC play heading into the road weekend. The Broncos are near the top in the conference in multiple offensive categories, ranking third in hitting percentage (.224), assists per set (12.33) and kills per set (13.24).

Bontrager Leading the Way
Junior Rachel Bontrager is one of the best offensive players in the conference, leading the MAC in kills per set (3.78) and points per set (4.30).

Seeking a Win
On Saturday, Western Michigan will seek its first regular season win against Ball State since 2015. The Broncos last defeated Ball State in five sets in the 2017 MAC Tournament Semifinals.

Reilly National Rankings
Senior Kathleen Reilly ranks 29th in the NCAA in digs per set (5.07) and 32nd in the nation in total digs (274). Last weekend, Reilly became the third player in program history to eclipse 2,000 career digs.

Five Sets =  No Problems
In 14 matches this season, WMU is a perfect 5-0 in five-set matches.

Scouting the Competition
Toledo (7-7, 0-2 MAC) – The Rockets are 1-3 at home this season and have lost their last two matches, falling to Ball State in three sets and Buffalo in five sets last weekend. Toledo is led by Zoe Birnbrich who ranks second in the MAC with a .362 attack percentage.

Ball State (7-7, 1-1 MAC) – Prior to its match-up with the Broncos, Ball State hosts Northern Illinois on Friday, Oct. 4. The Cardinals hold a 3-2 record at home this season and last weekend defeated Toledo before falling to Akron.

What's on Deck
Following its first road weekend of MAC play, Western Michigan returns home on Thursday, Oct. 10 against Northern Illinois before entertaining Bowling Green on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 5:00 p.m.
