MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Western Michigan track and field team wrapped up the Jack Johnson Classic at the University of Minnesota on Saturday, taking three event titles on the weekend.
The Broncos claimed the top spots in the long jump, 200-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay. Junior Erica Sheahan set the tone for the day with a win in the long jump. Sheahan reached a distance of 19' 2.75" (5.86m), falling just shy of a new personal best. She also went on to take fifth overall and fourth collegiately in the triple jump at 35' 3.75" (10.76m).
Broncos took first, second and fourth in the 200-meter dash. Junior sprinter Erin Dowd claimed the top spot after finishing with a time of 25.36 seconds. Freshman Taneidra Cain took second with a time of 25.62 and sophomore Diamond Mitchell took fourth overall with a time of 25.78.
Dowd, Cain, Madison Meredith and Alex Bryant also combined for WMU's win in the 4x400-meter relay. The group combined for a time of 3:50.06, over five seconds faster than second place South Dakota.
Sophomore thrower Abena Atuobi was the fourth collegiate finisher and fifth overall in the shot put after throwing 46' 5.25" (14.15m). Sophomore Taylor Eaton finished eight collegiately in the weight throw with a big personal-best distance of 52' 10.75" (16.12m).
Over in the high jump, junior Erica DePierre tied for second collegiately and third overall after reaching a height of 5' 2.25" (1.60m). DePierre was also one of four Broncos competing in the pentathlon on Friday. Senior Allison Hufangel was WMU's top finisher, taking seventh with 3,298 points.
In her first meet of the season, season Jasmine McLemore took fifth overall and fourth collegiately in the 400-meter dash. McLemore had been recovering from an injury suffered prior to the start of the season and ran 59.67 seconds in her first action.
Western Michigan heads to the University for the famed Meyo Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
