Dugan Shines for WMU in 93-67 Setback vs. EMU

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – For the second straight game senior Seth Dugan recorded a double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds as Western Michigan men's basketball suffered a 93-67 setback against Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon inside University Arena.

Dugan registered his eighth double-double of the season against the Eagles and over the past two games is averaging 26 points and 12.5 rebounds. Dugan's 29 points was three shy of his career-high as the senior center notched his seventh 20-point performance of the season.

Against EMU, the Otsego, Mich., native was 12-of-16 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Dugan had both five offensive and defensive rebounds to go along with three assists, one block and one steal in 36 minutes played. Dugan is now tied for the team lead with 15.6 points per game.

Fellow senior Josh Davis ranked second on the team with nine points while registering four rebounds, two assists and one block. The sophomore duo of Kawanise Wilkins and Michael Flowers each had seven points followed by freshman William Boyer-Richard and junior Adida Ikongshul with four.

Wilkins also had nine rebounds versus EMU, with five coming on the offensive glass. It's the most rebounds the sophomore has collected since having 12 back on Jan. 5 at Akron.

WMU shot 41.7 percent from the field but was unable to connect on the deep ball, knocking down just five three-pointers. Turnovers proved costly for the Broncos with 16 as EMU capitalized scoring 27 points off of turnovers.

With the loss the Broncos move to 0-7 in Mid-American Conference play and 6-14 overall. WMU returns home on Tuesday, Jan. 29 for a rematch with Kent State at 7:00 p.m. inside University Arena. WMU fell on the road at Kent State earlier this season, 88-73.

Eastern Michigan never trailed as they quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead just a minute into the game. The Broncos rallied back, making four of five field goals to cut the deficit down to two before EMU made four straight to take a 21-12 lead at the 13-minute mark of the first half.

Near the halfway point of the first half, the Eagles held a 26-14 lead before the Brown & Gold embarked on a 13-2 run to trail by one with nine minutes to play. However, EMU made five of their next six field goals to extend its lead back to double digits. The two teams traded baskets down the stretch as WMU went into the locker room trailing 49-37.

The Eagles got off to a hot start to begin the second half, going on an 8-3 run with six points coming from Elijah Minnie to hold a 64-48 advantage with 13 minutes left. Over the next six minutes the Broncos turned the ball over five times as EMU went on a 13-1 run to extend its lead to 75-49.

Both offenses stalled midway through the second half as WMU went just 1-of-10 from the field while EMU went 1-of-7 but still held on to a 78-51 lead. During the final five minutes of play, Western Michigan went 5-of-11 from the field to cut into the lead as EMU went 3-of-8 from the field. However, the late offensive spurt by the Broncos was not enough as the Eagles captured a 93-67 victory.

EMU shot 47.9 percent from the field and had four players score in double figures. Minnie led the Eagles with 29 points on 11-of-19 shooting. James Thompson IV earned a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. EMU improved to 9-11, 3-4 in MAC play.
