Lyubomirova and Tjon-A-Joe Named MAC Doubles Team of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced the women's tennis singles player and doubles team of the week on Wednesday, Jan. 23, with the Western Michigan pair of Melina Lyubomirova and Femke Tjon-A-Joe earning the doubles team of the week accolade. 

WMU went 1-1 on the weekend with a tough loss at Notre Dame prior to a big win over DePaul on Sunday. The senior/freshman duo of Lyubomirova/Tjon-A-Joe faced a tough opponent ranked among the ITA's Top 60 rankings at Notre Dame at the No. 1 spot before winning at No. 2 over DePaul, guiding Western Michigan to its first victory over the Blue Demons since 2007. 

Versus DePaul in Kalamazoo on Sunday, Jan. 20, the Broncos won at the third spot prior to falling at No. 1, setting up an exciting finish to clinch the doubles point at No. 2. Lyubomirova and Tjon-A-Joe won in a 7-6 (2) tie-breaker to earn the point and guide the Brown & Gold to a 6-1 victory.

The Broncos are back in action this Saturday, Jan. 26, as they host a doubleheader with IUPUI and Chicago State. The first match will start with doubles at 10:30 a.m. with the Chicago State match to follow at 5 p.m. from West Hills Athletic Club.
