Shooting Woes Result in Broncos Loss at BGSU

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – It was a night that baskets were hard to come by for the Western Michigan men's basketball offense, resulting in a 79-48 setback at Bowling Green on Saturday inside the Stroh Center.

From the field the Broncos shot a season-low 28.1 percent and was just 3-of-24 from long distance. WMU matched its lowest point total of the season with 48 points and had a season-low 17 points in the first half.

WMU had 11 of its 12 players that saw the court score with senior Seth Dugan leading the way with eight points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field. Dugan nearly had a double-double as well, registering nine rebounds.

Sophomore Kawanise Wilkins was the Broncos second leading scorer with seven points. Wilkins was 2-of-3 from the field and knocked down one three-pointer along with corralling three rebounds.

Matching his career-high in rebounds was junior Jared Printy with five off the bench for the Broncos. Printy scored two points on the afternoon with both coming from the free-throw line. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa native also had two assists.

Freshman Patrick Emilien continued his stellar play, scoring six points on 2-of-6 shooting from the field in 27 minutes played. Fellow freshman DJ Houston off the bench recorded a career-high six points on 2-of-4 shooting from the field during the final 12 minutes of play.

Overall the freshman class of Emilien, Houston, William Boyer-Richard, Adrian Martin and Luke Toliver combined to scored 19 points.

Western Michigan had 16 turnovers against BGSU with the Falcons scoring 14 points off those turnovers. The Broncos were outscored on the fast break, 22-5 while BGSU outscored WMU in the paint, 34-20. With the loss the Brown & Gold drop to 6-12 overall and 0-4 in conference play. The Broncos continue play on the road on Tuesday, Jan .21 at Ohio.

BGSU got off to a fast start in the first half, making three of its first four three-pointers to grab an 11-2 advantage. The Broncos responded with an 8-2 run to get to within three after two free-throws from Printy. WMU once again cut the lead down to three after a three from Boyer-Richard to trail 14-11 at the 10:49 mark.

After a three from BGSU, the score was deadlocked at 17-11 for nearly four minutes as BGSU went just 1-of-9 from the field while the Broncos went scoreless from the field during the stretch. Towards the end of the first half, both teams went a combined 2-of-18 from the field as WMU trailed 23-15.

BGSU extended their lead to end the first half going on a 9-2 run the final 2:13 to take a 30-17 lead into the locker room. WMU's 17 points was the lowest amount of points in a half this season.

The Falcons began the second half much like the first, embarking on an 11-3 run to gain 21-point lead just three minutes in. Midway through the second half, WMU got hot from the floor making three of four field goals to cut into the Falcon lead before BGSU countered with a 6-0 run to lead 56-31 at the eight-minute mark.

BGSU ended the game on a 9-2 run while WMU hit just one of their final 14 three-point field goals in the loss.
