Late Run Dooms Men’s Basketball in Loss to Toledo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan men's basketball and Toledo were tied at 70-70 with just under four minutes remaining before the Rockets embarked on an 8-0 run and made their final six field goals to defeat the Broncos, 85-77 on Saturday afternoon inside University Arena.

It was a back and forth affair between the two Mid-American Conference west division rivals that resulted in 16 lead changes and seven ties with neither team leading by more than nine.

With the setback Western Michigan now has an overall record of 6-10 and 0-3 in conference play. The Broncos are back at home on Tuesday, Jan. 15 for a showdown with the nationally ranked Buffalo Bulls. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at University Arena.

Senior Seth Dugan registered his sixth double-double of the season against the Rockets with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Dugan was 7-of-12 from the field and also had four assists in 34 minutes played. It was Dugan's first double-double since having 20 points and 10 rebounds against USC Upstate on Dec. 1.

Nearing a triple-double was sophomore Michael Flowers with a game-high 21 points along with seven rebounds and seven assists. Flowers' seven assists matches his career-high set back on Nov.10 against Mississippi. The sophomore guard finished with a career-high 20 field goal attempts and was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Off the bench, junior Jared Printy provided an offensive spark with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 from three. Printy has now registered at least one three-pointer in every game this season and 18 straight regular season games.
Senior Josh Davis was the fourth Bronco to score in double figures with 14 points while corralling seven rebounds and two steals. It's the second straight game the Broncos have had four score in double figures and fifth time this season.

Overall WMU shot 41.8 percent from the field and knocked down seven three-pointers. The Broncos hurt themselves with 12 turnovers as Toledo capitalized scoring 22 points off those turnovers. From the free-throw line both teams shot over 85 percent with WMU going 14-of-16 (.875) while Toledo went 9-of-10 (.900).

Toledo, who was ranked No.9 in the latest College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 poll improved to 13-3, 1-2 in MAC play and had four players score in double figures. The Rockets were led by Nate Navigato and Jaelan Sanford who each had 21 points.

From the start the Rockets were on point from long distance making six of their first eight three-pointers to take a 22-14 lead at the halfway point of the first half. The Broncos rallied back five minutes later, embarking on an 11-0 run to grab a 32-26 lead after a corner three from Printy.

Coming out of a timeout the Rockets rallied scoring five straight points to regain a one-point lead with three minutes left in the half. Down the stretch, WMU went 1-of-7 from the field and missed its final four shots as Toledo took a 37-36 lead into halftime.

Toledo began the second half much like the first half, scoring seven straight to gain a 44-36 advantage at the 17-minute mark. It didn't take long for the Broncos to respond, going on a 10-2 run with five points from Davis to regain the lead with just over 12 minutes to play.

The two teams traded baskets midway through the second half as the Broncos and Rockets jostled for the lead. During the back and forth affair, Printy scored five straight points at the seven-minute mark to give WMU a three-point lead before a three by UT's Luke Knapke tied the game once again.

With 3:35 to play the game was tied at 70-70 before the Rockets forced the Broncos to commit back-to-back turnovers, scoring six points off those turnovers to earn a 76-70 lead. Ultimately Toledo made seven of their final eight free-throws to seal the 85-77 victory.
