KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's soccer team and the University of Pacific played 110 minutes, including two overtime periods to reach a final score of 1-1 on Sunday, Sept. 30 at WMU Soccer Complex.Â
The Broncos' (6-4-1) winning streak ends at five games, while the unbeaten streak improves to six.Â
"Great college soccer game today," said head coach
Chad Wiseman. "Pacific is a very talented team and they showed their quality today."
The visiting Tigers held a slight advantage in the first half, leading 5-4 in shots and 4-2 in corner kick opportunities, while disallowing a Bronco shot on goal.Â
"We were up against it for the entire 45 minutes in the first half," said Wiseman. "Pacific had territory of the ball and we were forced to defend, defend defend. I'm very proud of the fact we got out of the half scoreless."
Play was back and forth in the second half with both teams generating corners and scoring chances. WMU got on the board with just over 16 minutes remaining, as
Zack Shane headed in a great cross from
Paul Liagre, giving the Brown & Gold the 1-0 lead at the 73rd minute mark. Shane's third goal of the season stands as his team-leading ninth point, while Liagre's fifth assist leads the team.Â
Despite WMU taking the one-goal lead near the end of regulation, Pacific answered quickly with the equalizer. The Tigers scored just five minutes later, finishing on a nice give and go play inside of the box.Â
The Broncos and Tigers were unable to break the 1-1 tie throughout the remaining minutes of the second half along with two ten-minute overtime periods.Â
"We were able to find more success with the counter down the flanks in the second half," Wiseman commented. "The goal came from a great service from Liagre and a great finish by Shane. We had two great chances to win the game in overtime, but missed the target on those. We could have lost the game in overtime just as easy." Â
Lukas Von Lienen made five saves in goal for WMU while playing a season-high 110 minutes. His record moves to 4-1-1 on the season.Â
The Broncos return to action with the Mid-American Conference opener on Saturday, Oct. 6 for a match against West Virginia University during Western Michigan Homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at WMU Soccer Complex.
"Bronco Soccer Fest was another great event for our supporters and community. Big thanks to Allison and her staff for the hard work they put in to make it such a fun event. We turn our attention to MAC play now. The MAC is currently the third-ranked conference of 24 in the RPI. Every game is going be a test like today and we are excited for that portion of the season to start," Wiseman concluded.Â
