KALAMZOO, Mich. – A strong second half propelled the Western Michigan women's soccer game to a 2-0 win over Wright State at the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
After a back-and-forth but scoreless first half, WMU (3-1-0) dominated early in the second half and picked up goals from Hannah Kahn and Alyssa Burke to put the Raiders in a quick 2-0 hole. The defense held from there, with sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Sargent making four saves to earn her second shutout of the season.
Kahn struck first in the 47th minute to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead. Burke played the ball across to the right side of the field to Grace Labadie. Labadie then played a give-and-go with Kahn and the senior midfielder buried it into the right side of the net for her second goal of the season. Labadie picked up her first assist of the season, while Burke notched her second.
Burke put the game out of reach in the 55th minute with a rocket from just beyond the right corner of the box. Labadie had the ball inside the box but Wright State cleared it just outside. Burke picked up the loose ball and fired a shot into the left-corner of the net for her second goal of the season.
Sargent went on to make two of her four saves in the remainder of the game.
The Broncos had an early chance to go up 1-0 just over a minute into the game. Tanja Vucenovic connected on a cross but right into the Raider goalkeeper.
WMU outshot Wright State 17-16 on the day and had a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Kahn led all Broncos with four total shots.
Western Michigan heads on the road for the second time this season, traveling to Oakland University to take on the Golden Grizzlies on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. The game can be seen live on ESPN+.
