TEMPE, Ariz. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team was named an All-Academic Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) while five individuals were named Scholar Athletes in Denise Azcui, Katja Fevralev, Melina Lyubomirova, Valentina Sanchez Briend and Gabriela Slavova.

"We are honored to be an Academic All-American Team," commented WMU head coach Ryan Tomlinson. "Student athletes have two full-time jobs in attending classes and competing. We strive to be the best student athletes we can be. I couldn't be happier for these five individuals, they definitely put in the time in the classroom."
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners were factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2017 and spring 2018).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
As a team, the Broncos finished the 2017-18 academic year with a 3.31 team GPA while Azcui (3.86 GPA), Fevralev (3.75 GPA), Lyubomirova (3.61 GPA), Sanchez Briend (3.50 GPA) and Slavova (3.68 GPA) led the Brown & Gold.
