Broncos Extend Winning Streak with Two Wins Friday

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Western Michigan softball team garnered two wins on Friday morning during the USF Under Armour Tournament defeating Delaware State (14-6) and Central Connecticut State (4-3). The Broncos are now winners of five straight and improve to 10-10 overall and 5-4 when playing in the Florida sun.

WMU vs. DSU
The Bronco offensive exploded in the first game against the Hornets as the team connected on season-high 16 hits. Freshman outfielder Samantha Coffel went 3-for-5 with four RBI's while junior catcher Courtney Sleeman also notched three hits to go along with one RBI and two runs scored.  

Despite trailing 5-0 after the first inning, Western Michigan used four runs in the top of the second and third to take the lead and never look back. The Hornets took back a run in the sixth but four runs in the final top-half helped seal the 14-6 win. Senior pitcher Anissa Sanchez earned the win after coming on to relieve and pitch 6.2 solid innings, giving up four hits to go along with two runs and three strikeouts. With the victory, Sanchez is now 3-3 overall this season.

WMU vs. CCSU
In the second game of the day, Western Michigan took a 4-0 lead after the third with one run coming in the second and three cushion runs in the third. The Blue Devils mounted a comeback as CCSU scored two in the fourth and in the top of the seventh hit a one-out homerun to pull within one. Freshman relief pitcher Sydney Stefanick retired the final out with a runner in scoring position, forcing the Blue Devil to ground out to the short stop Brooke Wyman.

Junior starting pitcher Jordan Kurth picked up the win to advance to 4-3 overall on the mound for the Broncos after throwing 4.0 innings. The lefty gave up two hits for two runs and also struck out a game-high six Blue Devils. Stefanick pitched the remaining 3 innings giving up two hits and a run but also delivered a strikeout. 

In the two games, redshirt senior Marlee Wilson batted .600 (3-for-5) to lead the team while Coffel had a team-high five hits on Saturday and is now leading the team this season with a .387 avg. Skyler Sobeski scored a team-high four runs and also went 2-for-4 from the batter's box while sophomore Kaylen Glenfield extended her hitting streak to five games.

The Broncos continue their second half of the USF Under Armour Tournament tomorrow with games against UCF at 2:00 p.m. and Villanova at approx. 4:15 p.m. before concluding the Florida trip against Rider on Sunday, March 11.
