PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Recording season highs in both hits and runs, Western Michigan baseball defeated Georgetown, 12-7 on Friday afternoon at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla.
The Broncos got a stellar performance from junior
Jimmy Roche at the plate going 4-for-5 with two RBIs. During the Florida trip for the Broncos, Roche has driven in eight runs in six games. Freshman
Blake Dunn also provided an offensive spark going 3-for-5 and scoring every time he reached base. Â Sophomore
Drew Devine went 2-for-5 on the day with three RBIs including a double in the eighth inning.
The Broncos have been a late inning team down in the sunshine state, scoring 22 runs in the seventh inning or later. The Broncos put up eight runs in the final three innings today with four coming in the seventh.
Western Michigan improves its overall record to 7-5 this season and 5-1 while in Florida. The Broncos conclude play in the sunshine state at the Snowbird Classic with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 10. WMU begins the day with a match-up versus Saint Joseph's at 10:00 a.m. followed by Florida International at 1:30 p.m.
Junior
Chris Modrzynski got the win on the mound for the Broncos improving his record to 1-1 this season. The junior LHP came in relief for the Brown & Gold and pitched 2.2 innings striking out two. Also out of the bullpen,
Jimmy Townsend-Chase picked up his third save of the year for Western Michigan.
The senior RHP went 2.1 innings allowing one hit and striking out three. In the last 9.2 innings Townsend-Chase has pitched, he has struck out 14 batters while allowing just two earned runs.
The Broncos jumped on the board early in the first inning picking up two runs on three hits. After a leadoff single from senior
Andrew Stone, junior
Connor Smith roped a double down the left field line to give WMU runners on second and third. Stone scored on a wild pitch and two batters later a Roche single brought home Smith from third to give WMU the early lead.
The Hoyas responded with one run on two hits in the bottom of the first to cut into the Western Michigan lead.
The Broncos got back in the scoring column in the third inning, picking up a pair of runs on a pair of hits. Junior
Conner Henderson led the inning off with a walk and then stole second two pitches later. Henderson is tied for second in the Mid-American Conference with seven stolen bases this season.
Dunn gave WMU runners on second and third after a double to right center field on a 2-0 count. After back to back strikeouts, Devine broke through at the plate with a two RBI single through the right side scoring Dunn and Henderson to give WMU a 4-1 lead.
WMU took a 4-1 lead heading into the fourth inning before Georgetown scored four runs on six hits to take the lead for the first time. The Hoyas added to their lead an inning later with one run in the fifth to give Georgetown a 6-4 advantage.
However, the Bronco offense came alive in the seventh, rallying for four runs on five hits with three of the runs being scored with two outs in the inning. The seventh inning for WMU was highlighted by freshman
Justin McIntyre who recorded his first collegiate at-bat and drove the ball down the left field line to earn his first career RBI.
Despite the Hoyas answering with one run in the bottom of the seventh, WMU roared back with two runs in both the eighth and ninth inning to secure the 12-7 victory.
