Box Score 2 BOWLING GREEN, Ohio-
Mackenzie Swinehart came up with the game-winning hit twice on Friday, leading Western Michigan to a doubleheader sweep at Bowling Green. The Broncos took game one 1-0 and held off the Falcons 5-3 in eight innings in game two.
Swinehart went 3-for-3 at the plate in game one and delivered the winning RBI with a two-out double in the fifth. Swinehart repeated her heroics in game two with another two-out double, scoring two runs in the top of the eighth to break a 3-3 tie.
With the two victories Western Michigan improves to 16-14 overall on the season and 3-2 in the Mid-American Conference. WMU and BGSU conclude this weekend's series with game three tomorrow at 11 a.m. (bumped up from an originally scheduled 1 p.m. start time).
Bowling Green (18-14, 1-4 MAC) scored first in game two with an unearned run in the bottom of the third and WMU pulled ahead with three runs in the sixth. The Broncos had four hits in the inning, including doubles by
Samantha Coffel,
Jenna Faultersack and
Sydney Stefanick.
Marlee Wilson (single), Faultersack and Stefanick each picked up an RBI.
Junior Kaylee Parker erased the 3-1 deficit for Bowling Green with a two-out, two-run, game-tying home run in the bottom of the seventh. The Falcons' momentum was short-lived as Faultersack and Stefanick were hit by pitches in back-to-back at bats in the top of the eighth, setting the table for Swinehart's two-run double.
Seniors
Anissa Sanchez and
Holly VanTilburg threw a combined shutout in game one. Sanchez (5-4 record) earned the win while VanTilburg got the save (her second of the year). Sanchez struck out one, walked one and scattered five hits. VanTilburg struck out three and allowed just two hits with no walks over the final 2.2 innings.
Freshman pitcher
Sydney Stefanick started game two for the Broncos and gave up just two hits and one walk over six innings. She left the game with WMU holding a 3-1 lead, and with the only run scored against her as unearned. Junior
Jordan Kurth surrendered the game-tying home run in the seventh, but returned in the eighth to retire the Falcons and pick up the win, moving her record to 5-3 on the season.
