KALAMAZOO, Mich. – One day after its shutout performance in the series opener, Western Michigan baseball was held to just five hits and no runs on Saturday as the Broncos dropped game two to Toledo, 3-0 at Robert J. Bobb Stadium.
Western Michigan recorded two of its five hits in the bottom of the ninth as both freshman
Blake Dunn and junior
Nate Grys each recorded singles. WMU loaded the bases in the ninth after junior
Jimmy Roche got on base thanks to an error by the Toledo shortstop.
However, the WMU rally was halted as three pitches later the Broncos grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game. The Brown & Gold had five different players register a hit against the Rockets on Saturday.
Sophomore
Drew Devine went 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk while Junior
Connor Smith, Grys, Dunn and Roche each went 1-for-4. On the mound, senior LHP
Jacob Piechota went 5.1 innings, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned) while striking out seven. It's the second straight outing in which Piechota has struck out seven batters.
Out of the bullpen, redshirt senior

WMU looked to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Smith laced a double off the left field wall with two outs. However, Smith was stranded at second as a strikeout ended the inning. Smith now ranks second on the team with four doubles this season.
The Rockets extended their lead in the top of the sixth thanks to two Bronco errors to give UT a 2-0 lead. Western Michigan led off the bottom half of the sixth with an infield single by Devine before a fielder's choice and back-to-back groundouts ended the inning.
