OXFORD, Ohio – The Western Michigan hockey team dropped its fourth-straight game, falling at Miami, 4-2, on Friday night.
The Broncos got goals from Corey Schueneman and Ethen Frank but penalties were an issue, giving up two power play goals to the nation's top power play. Freshman goalie Austin Cain made 24 saves in the loss and WMU was outshot 28-22 on the night.
Miami took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Ben Lown just 1:08 into the second period. WMU turned it over in its zone and Kiefer Sherwood fired a shot that went wide but bounced off the boards to Ben Lown. Lown punched the rebound into the net for his third goal of the season.
The RedHawks went up 2-0 after converting on the power play on a goal by Gordie Green. Green threw the puck towards the net during a goal-mouth scramble and it bounced off a Bronco and into the net at 4:47 in the second period.
WMU cut the lead to 2-1 on a power play goal by Schueneman. The Broncos had their second 5-on-3 advantage on the night and Schueneman ripped a shot past Ryan Larkin and into the net for his fourth goal of the season. Dawson DiPietro and Hugh McGing each picked up assists on the goal.
Grant Hutton scored for the RedHawks on a 5-on-3 with 3:36 left in the second period to push the lead to 3-1.
Louie Belpedio scored with 3:24 left to go in the game to put it out of reach, 4-1.
Frank added a late goal with 25 seconds remaining to pick up WMU's second goal, with Paul Washe picking up the only assist.
