Broncos Battle No. 2 St. Cloud State to 5-5 Tie

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team battled No. 2/3 St. Cloud State to a 5-5 tie at Lawson Ice Arena on Friday night.

The Broncos had a late lead but SCSU's Mika Ilvoven netted the game-tying goal with 49 seconds remaining in regulation. Neither team took advantage of the first overtime, resulting in the tie and each team getting a point in the standings. Jimmy Schuldt scored a goal just 35 seconds into the 3-on-3 overtime to give the Huskies the extra point.

The Broncos picked up two goals by Aidan Muir, and tallies from Paul Stoykewych, Hugh McGing and Paul Stoykewych. Muir's two goals came in his first action since suffering an injury back on Dec. 9. Stoykewych and DiPietro also had two assists for three-point nights, joining junior defenseman Luke Bafia, who had three assists. Only one penalty was called on St. Cloud State and WMU capitalized on it to finish 1-for-1 on the power play, while SCSU went 2-for-6.

Ilvoven gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead early in the first period at 3:28, finishing off a rush as the trailer and beating Ben Blacker for his second goal of the season.

Muir's first of the night and first goal since Oct. 20 to tie it up at 1-1. Muir corralled the puck and punched it into the net for his second of the season. Bafia picked up an assist, along with Stoykewych.

A penalty was called during Muir's goal, resulting in a power play for the Broncos. It took just 49 seconds for Western Michigan to capitalize, with Stoykewych finishing off a rebound on a shot by DiPietro, taking a 2-1 lead.

Easton Brodzinski scored on a 5-on-3 power play at 9:58 in the first period to tie it up at 2-2. Ryan Poehling knocked in a rebound to give SCSU a 3-2 lead heading into the second period.

After a busy first period, only one goal was scored in the second. Muir tied up the game at 3-3 at 4:04 after banking a shot off of a Husky defender and into the net. Stoyke. wych and Bafia once again picked up assists on the goal.

McGing gave the Broncos a 4-3 lead on his ninth goal of the season at 7:11 in the third period. Bafia flipped the puck into the air into the neutral zone and it bounced to McGing. The sophomore forward skated into the SCSU zone and fired it off the far post and into the net from the left side.

Schuldt tied it up at 4-4 on a power play goal at 9:15 on a shot from the center point.

DiPietro gave the Broncos a 5-4 lead with 2:25 remaining in regulation, punching in a rebound on a shot by Austin Rueschhoff before Ilvonen tied it up in the final minute of play.

Western Michigan was outshot 48-33 on the night.

The two teams will battle it out for the final time of the regular season on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
