WMU Topples Youngstown State 87-77

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Western Michigan men's basketball team got back in the win column on Saturday afternoon with an 88-77 victory over Youngstown State inside the Beeghly Center.

WMU snapped its two-game losing skid with hot shooting from beyond the three-point line as the Broncos knocked down 13 threes'. The 13 from long distance is tied for the sixth most in a single game in school history. It was also the third time this season that WMU has registered double-digit three's.

Overall the Brown & Gold shot 51.7 percent from the field and 41.9 percent from three and scored over 80 points for the fifth time this year. With the win WMU improves its overall record to 5-4.

The Broncos had three players score in double figures with sophomore guard Michael Flowers recording a career-high 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field. The Southfield, Mich., native played 32 minutes and had four rebounds and three assists.

Senior Josh Davis notched his fourth double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Davis was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line while going 4-of-9 from the field. The senior guard also had three assists, two blocks and one steal in 28 minutes played.

For the second time this season junior Jared Printy scored in double figures with 14 points to go along with two rebounds, two assists and one block. Printy was 4-of-8 from the field and 3-of-7 from long distance.

Western Michigan got a vital contribution off the bench from sophomore TJ Clifford who poured in a career-high nine points in 12 minutes. Clifford nearly eclipsed his career point total against the Penguins as he was 4-of-5 from the field and corralled two rebounds.

Sophomore Kawanise Wilkins played an all-around game on Saturday with eight points, eight rebounds and five assists in 31 minutes. Senior Seth Dugan was 3-of-6 from the field and had seven points and seven rebounds.

WMU will enjoy a week off before traveling to Ann Arbor for a match-up against nationally-ranked Big Ten Conference power Michigan on Saturday, Dec. 15. The Broncos then travel to Dayton for its final non-conference road game of the season on Wednesday, Dec. 19.

It was a three-point barrage for the Broncos to begin the game as the Brown & Gold made five of their first six three-pointers to hold a 19-11 lead at the 14-minute mark. WMU extended its lead to double digits later after freshman William Boyer-Richard knocked down a corner three with eight minutes remaining.

Late in the first half Youngstown State went on a 7-2 run to cut the Bronco lead to six before WMU countered with a 5-0 run to take a 49-38 lead into the locker room. In the first half the Brown & Gold knocked down 11 threes' and shot a staggering 59 percent from the floor.

Youngstown State came out firing to begin the second half, embarking on a 7-0 run to cut the Bronco lead to single digits. Once again WMU countered with a 5-0 run with a three from Printy followed by a Flower jumper to extend its lead.

Midway through the second half, the Penguins grabbed their first lead of the game at 58-56 after a 13-2 run. The lead didn't last long as the Broncos countered with a 7-0 run, getting baskets from Flowers, Clifford and Printy to regain the lead at 64-58 with 10 minutes left.

From that point on it was all WMU as the Broncos went on a 20-3 run during a six-minute span to extend its lead to as large as 18. The Penguins cut its deficit to single digits with 30 seconds left before the Broncos closed out the game at the free-throw line and snap its two-game losing skid.
