Loyola Pulls Away from Broncos, 64-53

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team suffered a 64-53 setback versus Loyola University Chicago Monday, Dec. 3 at University Arena, dropping its overall record to 2-4 on the season.

Deja Wimby led the Broncos with a season-high 20 points off 7-of-16 shooting, eight rebounds, and five steals. Jasmyn Walker was one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine boards while converting a season-high five field goals.

WMU shot 20-for-64 from the field and struggled from beyond the arc at 3-for-23. The visiting Ramblers shot 45.7 from the field (21-for-46) and out-rebounded the Broncos 40-35.

The Broncos jumped out to a 15-7 lead at the midway point of the first quarter with a three-pointer from Meredith Miller. Loyola responded on a 10-0 run to claim a 17-15 advantage heading into the second frame.

Both offenses struggled to open the second quarter, combining for just five points five minutes in. A Wimby steal and fast break layup tied the game at 19-19 with 4:56 remaining in the first half.

The visitors maintained a two-point lead at 27-25 heading into the break as both teams tallied 10 points in the second quarter. Loyola outscored the Broncos 18-14 in the paint while shooting 50 percent from the field. WMU forced 12 Rambler turnovers in the half and shot 31.3 percent (10-for-32) from the field.

Nearly four minutes into the third quarter, a Wimby three-point play with a layup and a foul gave WMU its first lead since the first quarter at 34-33. Soon after, Wimby completed another 'and one' opportunity to surpass her previous season-high with 18 points to give the Broncos a 39-37 lead, their largest of the second half.

The third quarter saw four lead changes while Loyola closed out the frame on a 14-4 run to take a 51-43 lead into the final 10 minutes.

Loyola extended its lead into double digits for the first time in the contest seconds in the fourth quarter. The Brown & Gold came within six at 59-53 with a Nina Farkic three-pointer with just under two minutes remaining. However, it was closest WMU would get as Loyola pulled away down the stretch.

Up next, the Broncos travel east to Detroit, Mich. to face the University of Detroit Mercy on Sunday, Dec. 9. The Broncos and Titans are scheduled to tip-off at 1 p.m.
