Broncos Fall to North Dakota in Hatter Classic Opener

DELAND, Fla. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team opened the Hatter Classic with a 62-50 loss versus the University of North Dakota on Thursday, Dec. 20 on the campus of Stetson University.

The Broncos struggled to shoot from the field, converting a season-low 14 field goals made on 52 attempts. WMU scored 22 points off UND turnovers. North Dakota out-rebounded Western Michigan 46-27 while shooting 41.2 percent from the field.

Deja Wimby led WMU with 17 points, shooting 5-for-11 from the field and 7-for-10 from the charity stripe. Jasmyn Walker led the Broncos with seven rebounds and tallied eight points. Maxine Moore added seven points off the bench. 

WMU took its first lead of the game at 12-11 near the end of the first quarter with a Walker three-pointer. Wimby tallied her second assist on the score to reach 400 in her career.


North Dakota led 16-12 after a physical first quarter in which the Broncos and the Fighting Hawks accumulated 14 fouls.

UND opened the second frame on an 8-1 run to take a 24-13 lead, forcing the Broncos to take their first timeout of the contest. The Fighting Hawks led by as many as 13 in the first half while claiming a 32-22 halftime advantage.

The Broncos duplicated their second quarter total in the third frame while UND outscored WMU 18-10 to grab their largest lead of the game with a 50-32 advantage heading into the final stanza.

WMU opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run. A Maddie Watters three-pointer put WMU behind by 11 at 50-39 with over five minutes to play. However, the Fighting Hawks responded and outscored the Broncos 12-11 for the remainder of time to secure the 62-50 win.

Game Notes

  • Deja Wimby reached the 400 career assist mark with her second assist of the game in the first quarter. She is one of eight Broncos all-time to eclipse 400 career helpers.
  • Wimby's seven free throws made are a season-high
  • Max Moore converted her first collegiate three-point field goal
