KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan women's basketball team picked up its second win of the season and
Shane Clipfell recorded his 100th victory as the Broncos' head coach as WMU defeated Eastern Kentucky, 64-53, Wednesday night.
Clipfell has 113 career wins, also earning 13 victories at Eastern Michigan when he was the interim head coach during the 2006-07 season.
Western Michigan trailed Eastern Kentucky by one at the break, 32-31, before the Broncos took the lead with a run midway through the second half. WMU outscored EKU 16-11 in the third quarter and 17-10 in the fourth quarter.
Both teams shot just over 39 percent from the floor for the night. The difference-maker was at the free-throw line, where Western Michigan went 17-for-21 and the Colonels were just 6-for-9. WMU also forced EKU into 18 turnovers, while committing just nine. The Broncos lost the rebounding battle, 40-29.
Four players scored in double figures to lead the Broncos. SophomoreÂ
Leighah-Amori Wool paced WMU in the first half with nine points and finished with 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.Â
Senior
Meredith Miller hit a key 3-pointer with 7:48 left in the game that stretched Western Michigan's lead to 10. She tied Wool with a team-high 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Redshirt senior
Jasmyn Walker scored nine points in the second half and 11 overall. She also pulled down seven rebounds. Senior point guard
Deja Wimby was the fourth Bronco in double digits. She had an all-around game with 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Freshman
Maxine Moore provided energy off the bench, going 3-for-4 from the field for six points in the second half.
Shay Soloman led Eastern Kentucky with 20 points and eight rebounds, both of which were game highs.
The lead changed hands 11 times and the score was tied on seven occasions.
Western Michigan improves to 2-3 overall. Eastern Kentucky drops to 0-6. The Broncos host Loyola-Chicago in their next game, Monday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.
