KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team hosted Big Ten opponent Michigan on Thursday, Nov. 15 at University Arena, falling by a score of 79-42.
The Wolverines were efficient from the field, shooting 50 percent while converting 29-of-58 field goals. While the Broncos consistently found open looks, they struggled to find a shooting stride, going 15-for-56 from the field.
Michigan opened the game with a 22-11 advantage in the first quarter, shooting 56.3 percent from the floor while limiting the Broncos to 3-of-16 shooting from the field. The Wolverines scored the first two baskets of the game and held on to an advantage throughout the contest.
In the first half, WMU shot 5-for-28 from the field and 2-for-19 from beyond the arc. The Brown & Gold forced 12 Wolverine turnovers while tallying six steals. Jasmyn Walker led WMU in the first 20 minutes with five points and four rebounds. Michigan took a 38-17 lead into the break.
Down by 40 heading into the final frame, the Broncos did not go down without a fight. They opened the final frame on a 9-2 run, capped off by a Kamrin Reed fast break layup. The fourth quarter was a bright spot for WMU, outscoring Michigan 17-14.
Reed led Western Michigan with a career-high 18-point performance, shooting 7-for-12 from the field and 3-for-6 from three-point range. Reed has scored in double-digits in three consecutive games.
Senior guard Deja Wimby appeared in her first game of the year and notched five points along with a pair of assists. Walker led WMU with three assists and tied for the team-lead with four rebounds, along with Leighah-Amori Wool.
The Broncos' free throw shooting woes were costly as they shot 8-for-20 at the charity stripe. WMU finished the game with a season-high 11 steals, forcing 19 Wolverine turnovers and converting eight points off them.
Up next, the Broncos (1-2) head to Oxford, Miss., for their first road trip of the season. WMU is set to face Ole Miss on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m.
