Turnovers Plague Broncos in Loss at Ole Miss

OXFORD, MS. – The Western Michigan men's basketball team opened up its road schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 90-64 loss at Ole Miss inside the Pavilion at Ole Miss.

The Broncos were plagued by turnovers committing 24 for the game with 17 coming in the first half. The Rebels capitalized on the WMU mistakes scoring 39 points off of turnovers and 24 in the first half alone.

Offensively the Brown & Gold had three players score in double figures with junior Jared Printy leading the way with a career-high 17 points. Printy knocked down a career-high five threes' and was 6-of-8 from the floor. It was Printy's first career game scoring in double figures and now has eight threes' in two games this season.  

Behind Printy was senior Josh Davis with 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field. The Detroit, Mich., native scored nine of his 11 points in the second half while having one rebound and one assist.

Senior Seth Dugan followed up his 32 point, 22 rebound performance on Tuesday against Detroit Mercy by nearing another double-double with 10 points and seven rebounds. In 28 minutes, Dugan was 3-of-8 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Off the bench WMU got a strong contribution from junior Adida Ikongshul who poured in six points and three rebounds and one assist in 10 minutes played. Overall WMU had 19 points off the bench compared to 32 for Ole Miss.

As a team the Broncos shot 40.8 percent from the field with seven three-pointers. On the glass, WMU was outrebounded, 31-28 with both teams having 10 offensive rebounds. Ole Miss dominated in the paint outscoring WMU, 38-18.

The Broncos fall to 1-1 on the season and have a quick turnaround, traveling to Oakland for a match-up with the Golden Grizzlies on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN Plus.

It was not the start the Broncos wanted in front of over 5,200 fans at the Pavilion at Ole Miss as WMU had six turnovers in the first three minutes of the ballgame. The Rebels capitalized embarking on a 13-2 run to take a 15-4 lead at the 15-minute mark of the first half.

Ole Miss led by as many as 24 in the first half as the Rebels took a 43-22 lead into halftime. WMU shot just 40 percent from the field in the first half as Ole Miss shot a staggering 53.3 percent. The Rebels were aggressive in the first 20 minutes of play, making nine trips to the free-throw line compared to WMU's one.

The Broncos came out firing to begin the second half and cut the Rebel lead down to 12 at the 17-minute mark. WMU got back-to-back three's from Printy followed by lay-ups from Davis and Dugan to cut the lead to 44-32. The 10-0 run was also highlighted by stifling defense as the Brown & Gold held Ole Miss scoreless for nearly eight minutes going back to the first half.

However, the Ole Miss offense got hot once again going on a 7-0 run and making three straight field goals to extend its lead. The Rebels propelled its lead back up to 20 after embarking on a 9-0 run and holding WMU scoreless from the field for over four minutes.

Midway through the second half the Bronco offense came to life, making five of its next seven field goals but was unable to gain momentum on the Rebels as Ole Miss went 7-of-9. Down the stretch, the Broncos earned their final 12 points from the free-throw line as WMU went scoreless the final six minutes from the field to drop its first game of the season.
