YPSILANTI, Mich. – On a night when senior
Mary Murphy became WMU's all-time career assist leader, Western Michigan volleyball had its two-match win streak snapped as the Broncos fell to Eastern Michigan in four sets (25-18, 7-25, 8-25, 21-25).
Murphy is now Western Michigan's career assists leader with 4,092, passing Kris Penza who played for the Broncos from 1990-93. Against the Eagles the senior setter collected 25 assists to go along with six digs and three kills.
Sophomore
Rachel Bontrager was the Broncos lone double-digit kills performer with 10 while also nearing a double-double with nine digs. Junior
Kate Carey and freshman
Meredith Phillips ranked second on the team with six kills on the night. Phillips also poured in four digs and two blocks.

Kathleen Reilly with 15 followed by Bontrager with nine and Murphy with six. From behind the line the Broncos recorded three service aces with two coming from Bontrager and one coming from sophomore
Kaley Smith.
As a team the Brown & Gold hit .039 compared to EMU's, .312. At the net, WMU recorded just three blocks while EMU had seven.
WMU saw its two-match win streak come to an end and now has an overall record of 12-8 and 2-4 in Mid-American Conference play. The Broncos return home next weekend for match-ups against Buffalo on Friday, Oct. 12 and Akron on Saturday, Oct. 13.
Saturday's match against Akron is Alumni Night as Western Michigan will honor the 10-year anniversary of the 2008 NCAA Sweet 16 team.
First Set (WMU – 25, EMU – 18)
It was a close match early in the first set as the two teams traded points en route to an 11-11 tie midway through the set. WMU earned a 17-14 advantage later on in the set thanks to a 5-1 run highlighted by kills from sophomores
Emma Yarber and
Rachel Bontrager to force an EMU timeout. Down the stretch the Broncos scored eight of the final 12 points to capture the first set, 25-18.
Second Set (WMU – 7, EMU – 25)
The second set was all Eastern Michigan as the Eagles recorded a staggering .500 attack percentage compared to WMU's, -.185. WMU never led in the second as EMU used a blistering 13-0 run to gain a 19-4 advantage. The Brown & Gold got kills from redshirt freshman

Willow Martin before the Eagles closed out the second on a WMU attack error to tie the match at 1-1.
Third Set (WMU – 8, EMU – 25)
Eastern Michigan earned a 2-1 lead in the match after recording a 25-8 third set victory. EMU got off to a fast start using a 7-0 run to take a 11-3 lead. The Broncos looked to claw their way back midway through the set and trailed by seven after a kill from sophomore
Jordan White. To end the set, the Eagles rattled off eight straight points for the victory.
Fourth Set (WMU – 21, EMU – 25)
WMU jumped out to an early 13-8 lead in the fourth set thanks to three straight kills from Phillips, Carey and Bontrager along with back-to-back service aces from
Kaley Smith. However, the Eagles guided their way back thanks to a 6-2 run to tie the match at 20-20. Later in the set, the Broncos and Eagles traded points en route to a 20-20 tie late.
With the match tied at 20-20, the Eagles scored five of the next six points to snap the Broncos two-match win streak and earn the victory.
