WMU Falls on the Road at Toledo in Five Sets

TOLEDO, Ohio –  Despite career nights from redshirt freshman Janell Williams and freshman Sammi Labolle, the Western Michigan volleyball team fell to Toledo in five sets (25-16, 23-25, 25-14, 20-25, 13-15) on Friday night inside Savage Arena.

Williams sparked the WMU offense against the Rockets registering a team-high 16 kills to go along with a staggering .519 attack percentage. It's the second straight match that Williams has earned double-digit kills, recording 12 at Kent State last weekend.

Fellow freshman Labolle notched a career-night as well with 15 kills and a .278 attack percentage. Labolle also registered 12 kills at Kent State last weekend and collected her fifth double-digit kill match of the season.

For the 10th time this season, sophomore Rachel Bontrager earned a double-double recording 14 kills to go along with 19 digs. The Valparaiso, Ind., native now has 23 matches this season in which she has had double-digit kills.

Senior Mary Murphy set up the Bronco offense against Toledo with a season-high 54 assists while also having two kills, two service aces and six digs. It's the second time this season the senior setter has had over 50 assists in a match.

Also recording a career-night was sophomore Kaley Smith with 35 digs. In the past two matches Smith has totaled 64 digs. Junior Kathleen Reilly ranked second on the team with 20 digs followed by Bontrager with 19.

As a team the Broncos outhit the Rockets with a .229 attack percentage compared to UT's, .192. At the net Toledo was dominant recording 10 blocks compared to WMU's five.

WMU now has an overall record of 13-12 and is 3-8 in Mid-American Conference play. The Brown & Gold are back in action on the road on Saturday, Oct. 27 against MAC West division leader Ball State. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.

First Set (WMU – 25, Toledo – 16)
It was a dominant first set for the Broncos, registering a .417 attack percentage and holding Toledo to just a .115 attack percentage. It was a back and forth set early before the Broncos seized momentum and grabbed a 17-10 lead. Down the stretch, WMU scored five of the final eight points to take the first set, 25-16.

Second Set (WMU – 23, Toledo – 25)
The Rockets jumped out to a 15-10 lead midway through the second set before the Broncos embarked on a comeback to tie the match at 18-18. The match was all tied up at 23-23 late before an attack error by WMU followed by Toledo kill gave the Rockets a 25-23 set victory.

Third Set (WMU – 25, Toledo – 14)
WMU dominated the third set to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Western Michigan embarked on a massive run to take control of the third, embarking on a 11-2 run to seize the match. In the third, the Broncos amassed a staggering .444 attack percentage.

Fourth Set (WMU – 20, Toledo – 25)
Trailing 2-1 in the match the Rockets stormed back in the fourth set to force a fifth and final set. The fourth set was back and forth before UT went on a 3-0 run to tie the set at 14-14. Ultimately the Rockets went on a 12-5 run to force a final set inside Savage Arena.

Fifth Set (WMU – 13, Toledo – 15)
In the fifth set, the match was tied at 4-4 early before UT went on a 4-0 run to gain the lead. The Broncos rallied back to tie the set at 10-10 after a kill by Williams and a bad set by UT's Carly Townsend. The set was once again tied, 11-11 before UT scored back to back points to force a WMU timeout. After the timeout, Toledo scored three of the final four points to earn the five-set win.
