Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Hockey Falls at No. 15 Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. – After erasing a 2-0 deficit, the Western Michigan hockey team fell 6-2 at No. 15 Omaha at Baxter Arena on Friday night.

Down 2-0 heading into the third period the Broncos picked up goals by Neal Goff and Austin Rueschhoff to tie it up with 10:30 left to go. UNO netted the game-winning power play goal at 13:42 on a shot from deep Joel Messer. UNO added two empty-net goals and another power play goal to set the final, 6-2.

The Broncos outshot the Mavericks 34-29 on the night but junior goalie Evan Weninger made 32 saves on the night. Western Michigan kept up its power play goal-scoring streak, going 1-for-5 on the night but Omaha finished 3-for-7.

UNO took a 1-0 lead with 2:55 left in the first period on a goal by Teemu Pulkkinen, who punched in a loose puck that bounced in front of Cain.

David Pope pushed the lead to 2-0 with 1:32 left to go in the second period on a power play goal from the right circle.

WMU's comeback bid started 2:50 into the third period on Goff's third goal of the season. The senior defenseman took the puck from Jade McMullen and fired a wrist shot past Weninger from the top of the left circle to cut the lead to 2-1.

Rueschhoff tallied on the power play to tie it up at 2-2. The freshman forward's ninth of the season came from the left circle after Cam Lee found him in behind the UNO defense.

After Messner gave Omaha the lead, Zach Jordan and Cole Pickup netted empty-net goals to push the lead to 5-2. Lukas Buchta added a power play goal later after a major penalty was called on WMU's Hugh McGing.

The two teams battle it out for the final time of the regular season on Saturday at 8:07 p.m.
