KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan junior forward Richard Zehnal netted his first collegiate goal for his first collegiate point just 35 seconds into overtime to give the 11th-ranked Broncos a 3-2 win over Colorado College at Lawson Ice Arena on Friday night.
With both teams having a man in the box, Hugh McGing found Zehnal trailing at the left circle. Zehnal skated in and went forehand to backhand before putting it past CC goalie Alex Leclerc to blow the roof off of Lawson. McGing picked up his 18th assist of the season and Cam Lee tallied his third helper of the night on the game-winning goal.
Ben Blacker made 30 saves on the night, while Leclerc made a game-high 40. The Western Michigan penalty kill finished the night a perfect 7-for-7, including a five-minute major power play in the second period. The Bronco power play went 2-for-5, making the fourth-straight game the team has tallied at least twice with the man advantage.
After a scoreless first period and nearly scoreless second period, Western Michigan took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal by Scott Moldenhauer with 1:01 remaining in the second. Dawson DiPietro found Moldenhauer wide-open for the back-door tap in. The goal was the second of the season for the senior captain. DiPietro notched his 16th assist of the season, while Lee tallied his ninth and first of the game.
Colorado College tied it up early in the third period on a goal by Trevor Gooch. Gooche finished off a loose puck that was left during a scramble after Branden Makara was tripped on a breakaway. The delayed-penalty goal came at 2:15 but the Broncos killed off the ensuing penalty.
A bad change led to CC taking a 2-1 lead with 7:44 remaining in regulation. Troy Conzo and Christiano Versi played the give-and-go with Conzo finishing it off for his second goal of the season.
Paul Stoykewych tied it up with 5:08 left to play on a power play goal. WMU was looking to hit Moldenhauer on a repeat play from his first goal but Moldenhauer passed up the shot and found Stoykewych in the slot and the senior forward banged it in for his third goal of the season.
WMU had a late power play in the third period but was held before Zehnal's overtime heroics.
The two teams battle it out again on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game can be seen live on NCHC.tv.
