KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan men's basketball had just 12 turnovers on the night but Buffalo was able to score 19 points off those turnovers as the Bulls defeated the Broncos, 84-74 inside University Arena on Friday night in front of a national television audience.
Despite the loss, Western Michigan had five score in double figures for the second time during Mid-American Conference play. The Broncos drop to 11-8 overall and 3-3 in MAC play and look to snap a two-game losing streak on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at home against MAC West leader Toledo.
Five scored in double figures for the Broncos, led by senior
Thomas Wilder and junior
Josh Davis each recording 16 points. Wilder went just 4-of-13 from the field but 8-of-9 from the free-throw line while also collecting six rebounds and four assists.
Davis had a stellar night from beyond the three-point line, knocking down four threes' while also corralling a team-high seven rebounds.
Off the bench, sophomore
Reggie Jones sparked the Bronco offense scoring 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the field. The 14 points off the bench was the second most by any player this season. Jones in 25 minutes played recorded four rebounds and two assists.
Fellow sophomore
Brandon Johnson continued his stellar play with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field to go along with six rebounds. Johnson over the past two games has shot 60 percent (10-of-16) from the field scoring 26 points. Rounding out the double digit scoring for the Broncos was junior
Bryce Moore with 11 points.
WMU shot 40 percent from the field compared to Buffalo's 47 percent as the Broncos connected on just seven threes'. Buffalo outrebounded WMU, 43-36 and had 12 fast break points compared to WMU's, two. UB had four score in double figures with Jeremy Harris and CJ Massinburg each leading the way with 20 points. Buffalo moved to 14-5 overall and remained perfect in MAC play at 6-0.
The Bronco offense got off to a slow start as WMU missed their first three shots and was shooting just 17 percent through the first five minutes of action. Buffalo opened their lead to double digits midway through the first half as the Bulls embarked on a 6-0 run and made 5-of-7 from the field to take a 26-14 lead.
After holding Buffalo scoreless nearly four minutes the WMU offense came to live, going on a 14-2 run to cut the lead to 30-28 with three minutes to play in the first. Down the stretch, Buffalo made just one of their last seven shots as WMU trailed the Bulls, 36-34 heading into halftime.
Out of halftime, the Broncos quickly took the lead after five straight points, highlighted by Davis knocking down one of his four threes' to give WMU their first lead of the game. Through the first four minutes of the second half, both teams traded basked as WMU and UB were tied 44-44 at the first media timeout.
The turning point of the game came at the 13-minute mark of the second half with WMU holding on to a two-point lead. UB quickly regained the lead after going on a 12-2 run, making five straight field goals. Buffalo extended their lead to double digits after WMU went scoreless for three minutes and made one of their next seven shots.
In the final minutes, WMU got the deficit to eight after back-to-back highlight reel dunks by Davis but it wasn't enough to mount as comeback as the Broncos fell to the Bulls.
