KALAMAZOO, Mich. –
Deja Wimby had a career-night, with 15 points, 10 assists, nine rebounds and six steals as the Western Michigan women's basketball team defeated Northern Illinois 90-77 on senior day at University Arena.
Wimby was one of four Broncos to score 15 or more points led by
Marley Hill who scored 20 points, 16 of which came in the second half.
Meredith Shipman, who was honored after the game for her outstanding career at Western Michigan, made two three-pointers for the 13
th straight game and she finished with 16 points.
Breanna Mobley was two rebounds shy of a double-double, going 7-of-10 from the field for 17 points and she grabbed eight rebounds.
The Broncos used a 10-2 run midway through the first quarter to take control of the game and never looked back. Down 9-6, WMU used a series of layups by
Breanna Mobley who had 11 points in the first half to take a 16-11 lead, and ended the first quarter up 24-16.
Western Michigan pounded the glass throughout the first half, grabbing 12 offensive rebounds which led to nine second chance points. Mobley and Wimby each had four offensive boards a piece, and Wimby had five of her 10 assists in the first 20 minutes. The Broncos took a 39-28 lead into break.
WMU came out strong in the second half, scoring the first seven points out of the break to take its largest lead of the game at 48-31. NIU looked to make a run at the end of the third quarter, with Western up 57-43. The Huskies went on a 15-8 run to close the deficit to 65-58 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Broncos opened up the fourth quarter on a 5-0 spurt to get the lead back to double digits. From there, the two teams traded baskets the rest of the way as NIU was never able to get within seven.
The win ends the regular season for the Broncos who finish with a 17-12 overall record and 8-10 in the MAC. Western Michigan will host Miami (OH) on Monday at 5:30 p.m., in the first round of the MAC Tournament. For tickets go to wmubroncos.com/tickets or call 1-888-4-WMU-TIX.
