Hockey Falls to Denver, Awaits NCAA Tournament Selection Show

MINNEAPOLIS – Senior forward Mike McKee scored in his 100th career college game but the Western Michigan hockey team fell to No. 1/1 Denver, 3-1, in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Frozen Faceoff Third Place game at the Target Center on Saturday afternoon.

McKee scored WMU's lone goal at 5:29 in the second period to finish off a two-on-one and tie the game up at 1-1 after Colin Staub netted a power play goal in the first period to give the Pioneers an initial lead.

Just over a minute later at 6:37 Liam Finlay fired a shot in from the deep slot to give DU a 2-1 lead. Finlay skated into the WMU zone and used a quick release to get one past WMJU goalie Ben Blacker for the eventual game-winner.

The Broncos outshot the Pioneers 15-5 in the second period, including eight shots on the power play, but only McKee got one past DU goalie Evan Cowley.

Staub added his second of the night at 14:42 in the third period and Jarid Lukosevicius created a turnover in the WMU zone and found Staub open in the slot, putting the game out of reach at 3-1.

Western Michigan now waits for the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on Sunday at noon on ESPNU to see where it ends up for the tournament.
