Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Hockey Falls at Omaha, 6-3

OMAHA, Neb. – The Western Michigan hockey team fell short at Omaha, losing 6-3 at Baxter Arena on Saturday night but splitting the series on the season with the Mavericks after the 7-6 win on Friday night.

Sheldon Dries and Corey Schueneman each had two points, while Aidan Muir and Matheson Iacopelli each tallied goals.

Omaha jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two first-period goals by Riley Alferd and a power play goal by Frederik Olofsson just 1:10 into the second period.

WMU's comeback started at 7:01 in the second period when Iacopelli netted his 16th goal of the season. Molino dished it off to Iacopelli in the neutral zone and the sophomore forward came roaring up the left side of the ice and into the UNO zone. The Chicago Blackhawks' draft pick ripped it past Omaha goalie Alex Blakenburg to cut the lead to 3-1.

Minutes later Schueneman cut the lead to 3-2 on his fourth goal of the season. Dries won a faceoff in the Maverick zone back to Schueneman and the sophomore defenseman had his initial shot blocked. He corralled the puck and then skated into the left circle and beat Blakenburg on his glove side.

Muir tied the game up at 3-3 on a power play goal at 5:35 in the third period. Muir was screening the goalie and redirected a shot by Schueneman and into the net. The goal was his second of the season and first since returning from injury. Dries also picked up an assist for his sixth point of the weekend.

Olofsson netted the game-winning goal for his second of the night at 10:02. After a faceoff was misplayed behind the Bronco net Steven Spinner centered it to Olofsson and he back-handed it into the net.

Luc Snuggerud added a power play goal at 17:07 to push the lead to 5-3 before Justin Parizek added an empty-net goal.

WMU outshot UNO 36-34 on the night and finished 1-for-4 on the power play.

Western Michigan returns home to host North Dakota on Friday and Saturday. Friday's game can be seen live on CBS Sports Network, while Saturday's can be seen on NCHC.tv. Saturday is also WMU's annual Ice Duchenne benefit game. Look for more details on Sunday.
