KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team dropped its fourth straight game, falling to Miami, 5-2, on Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena.
The Broncos (9-8-1, 5-4-0-0 NCHC) picked up goals from Hugh McGing and Corey Schueneman on the night. WMU outshot the RedHawks 34-25 but MU goalie Ryan Larkin made a game-high 32 saves. Western Michigan finished 2-for-5 on the power play, while Miami went 1-for-4.
The RedHawks took an early 1-0 lead on a goal 12:13 in the first period. Gordie Green scored from the left circle after a deflected puck bounced right to his stick. The goal was the first of two for Green on the night.
WMU tied it up at 5:35 on a power play goal by McGing. Wade Allison fired a shot toward the net and it deflected off of McGing's leg and into the net for his fifth goal of the season.
Miami responded with a power play goal just 46 seconds later to take a 2-1 lead on a power play goal. Karch Bachman lit the lamp for his third goal of the season, with Josh Melnick and Green tallying assists.
Melnick netted the game-winner at 13:20 in the second period after forcing a turnover and beating WMU goalie Ben Blacker over his left shoulder.
The RedHawks went up 4-1 at 4:32 in the third period on a goal by Phil Knies. Chaz Switzer fired the puck deep and it bounced off of Bronco and bounced to Knies for the goal from just in front of the crease.
Schueneman tallied WMU's second power play goal of the night at 5:10 in the third period. McGing chased down a loose puck to keep it in the zone and dished it off to Schueneman at the top of the left circle. The sophomore defenseman passed it down to Colt Conrad just below the left circle. DiPietro played the give-and-go back to Schueneman and he buried it from the right of the crease for his first goal of the season.
Western Michigan pulled Blacker from the net with 2:07 left in the game but Green added an empty-net goal with 1:19 remaining.
The two teams battle it out again at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
