KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan men's basketball saw its two-game win streak come to an end on Monday night as the Broncos fell to Big Sky favorite Idaho, 82-52 inside University Arena.
WMU's overall record drops to 6-5 with two non-conference games left against Milwaukee on Dec. 22 and Cleveland State on Dec. 30. The Broncos open up Mid-American Conference play at home on Tuesday, Jan. 2 against Akron.
Junior
Bryce Moore led the Broncos for the first time this season with 11 points. Moore was on target from beyond the three-point line, knocking down three from long distance. The Indianapolis, Ind., native scored in double figures for the 15
th time in his career.
Recording 30-plus minutes for the fifth straight game, senior
Drake LaMont poured in nine points along with seven rebounds. Off the bench, sophomore
Reggie Jones had five points, three rebounds and two assists. Junior
Josh Davis played 31 minutes, grabbing eight rebounds and four points.
Senior guard
Thomas Wilder registered a season-low nine points with three assists and one steal. It was the first time in 29 games that Wilder didn't score in double figures which was the 12
th longest streak in the nation.
Idaho outrebounded WMU, 45-29 and was lethal from the three-point line as the Vandals connected on 17 threes'. As a team, the Broncos shot just 34 percent of the field while Idaho shot 50 percent from the field and 57 percent from beyond the arc.
Idaho's senior guard Victor Sanders had a game-high 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor. Senior Jordan Scott registered a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Vandals.
It was a slow start to the first half as WMU and Idaho went a combined 2-of-18 the first nine minutes of play. The game was knotted up at 2-2 before Idaho went on a 6-0 run to take an 8-2 lead at the ten-minute mark. WMU cut their deficit to six at the five-minute mark of the first half before the Vandals countered with an 11-0 run to extend their lead to double digits. Idaho took a 31-16 lead into halftime as the Broncos shot just 24 percent in the first.
The Vandals began the second half with a three-point barrage, embarking on an 11-0 run with three from long distance. Idaho led by as many as 33 midway through the second half as the Vandals went 11-of-15 from beyond the arc during the final 20 minutes of play. Overall, WMU was outscored 51-36 in the second half.
Moore was the lone bright spot for the Broncos in the second half, recording all of his team-high 11 points in the second.
The victory improves Idaho's overall record to 8-3 and marked the third straight victory for the Vandals. Idaho was the preseason favorite to win the Big Sky Conference.
