MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Western Michigan volleyball team suffered its second loss of the weekend, falling at Mid-American Conference rival Central Michigan on Saturday night, 3-0 (19-25, 23-25, 22-25).
Senior Sydney LeMay and sophomore Quiana Ware each had 11 kills to lead the team. The Broncos (14-11, 7-7 MAC) improved on their hitting percentage from the loss at Eastern Michigan, hitting .222 against the Chippewas. Sophomore libero Kathleen Reilly led WMU with 15 digs, while junior setter Mary Murphy had 30 assists.
CMU opened the first set with a 4-0 run. The Broncos cut it to 4-3 but the Chippewas maintained a two-point gap until an 8-2 gave them some separation, taking a 17-9 lead. CMU closed out the set 25-19.
WMU took the early lead in the second set, leading 4-2, but Central Michigan battled back to tie it up at 6-6. Western Michigan gained another two-point lead at 12-10, but CMU responded with another 8-2 run to wrestle control off the set. The Broncos got within one at 21-20, but a kill by Paige Carey pushed the lead back to two. A CMU attack error made the score 22-21 but the Broncos responded to that point with a serve error. Olivia Kofie made it a tight contest with a kill to bring Western Michigan within one, 23-22 but the set was closed out 25-23.
Central Michigan controlled the third set early with a 4-1 score. WMU slowly came back and tied it up at 12-12 after an attack error on Carey. The teams traded points and one-point leads until it was 18-18. A kill by Carey gave CMU a 19-18 lead and the Broncos were never able to get over the hump, falling 25-22.
Western Michigan returns home to host Toledo on Friday and Ball State on Sunday, both matches are set for 7:05 p.m. first serves.
