Three-Point Shooting Lifts WMU past Kalamazoo College, 87-61

KALAMAZOO, Mich.  – Ā Four players scored in double figures as the Western Michigan men's basketball team connected on 13 three-pointers en route to an 87-61 victory over neighbor Kalamazoo College on Saturday afternoon inside University Arena.

As a team the Broncos shot 37.1 percent from beyond the three-point line and 43.4 percent from the floor. Thirteen of the 14 players for WMU scored while seven different Broncos had a three-pointer.

Junior Seth Dugan led the way for the Brown and Gold with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Dugan also collected a team-high seven rebounds and three assists in 19 minutes of action. Sophomore Jarrin Randall and freshman Michael Flowers each poured in 11 points while sophomore Reggie Jones had 10.

Defensively, the Broncos dominated the Hornets forcing 27 turnovers with WMU scoring 25 points off turnovers. WMU registered 16 steals with preseason All-MAC West selection Thomas Wilder leading the team with four. Between the two teams a total 53 fouls were called as Kalamazoo College had 30 compared to WMU's 23.

Exhibition play comes to an end for Western Michigan as the Broncos set their sights on the season opener against Siena Heights on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2:00 p.m. WMU will then travel south to battle 2017 Final Four participant South Carolina on Monday, Nov. 13 in a non-bracketed game of the 2017 Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach.

Kalamazoo College battled during the early stages of the first half as WMU scored the first six points before Hornets rallied back to cut the deficit to four at 12-8 with 14:04 remaining. After the media timeout, Western Michigan raced out to a double-digit lead thanks to a 12-0 run in which Kalamazoo College was held scoreless for nearly seven minutes.

WMU extended their lead to 20 after Wilder went coast-to-coast and converted on the fast break lay-up before getting fouled. The Broncos went into the locker room at halftime with a 39-17 lead.
In the second half the Broncos continued to cruise, shooting 51.6 percent from the floor and knocking down eight threes'. WMU's lead was 30 at the midway point of the second half after nailing four straight three-pointers with back-
to-back three's coming from junior Bryce Moore.

Kalamazoo College connected on six straight field goals down the stretch to cut the WMU lead to 67-46 but the Broncos countered with an 11-0 run in two minutes to secure the exhibition victory. Ā
