OXFORD, Ohio – The Western Michigan volleyball team has advanced to the Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship game on Sunday after upsetting the second-seeded Bowling Green Falcons, 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21) at Miami University on Saturday night.
The Broncos move on to take on the host RedHawks at 4:30 p.m.
Freshman outside hitter Rachel Bontrager had a match-high 18 kills to lead WMU (18-12). Sydney LeMay hit .500 on 14 kills, while sophomore Quiana Ware had 13 and Olivia Kofie had 11. Kathleen Reilly had a match-high 30 digs, while Bontrager contributed 12 for her second double-double of the tournament. Mary Murphy had a match-high 50 assists as the Broncos hit .277
Bowling Green jumped out to an early 10-5 lead in the first set cruised to a 25-19 win.
The Falcons had an early lead in the second set as well, taking a 9-7 advantage. BGSU maintained its two-point gap to a 11-9 lead. The broncos responded with a 3-0 run to take a 12-11 lead. The teams traded points and leads as the Falcons went up 14-13. A kill by LeMay and two-straight aces by Bontrager gave the Broncos a 16-14 advantage and the lead for good. Bowling Green did come within one twice at 17-16 and 20-19 but WMU pulled away in the end and took the set 25-21.
The third set opened up with the Falcons taking a slight 8-7 advantage. A kill by Ware tied it up at 8-8 and an ace by Kaley Smith gave WMU a 9-8 lead. WMU never trailed after that, extending the lead to 13-9 and then cruising to the 25-18 win.
The fourth set saw the Broncos and the Falcons race to a 10-10 tie. BGSU took a 14-11 lead and maintained the three-point gap to 18-15. Western Michigan went on a 4-0 run to take a 19-18 lead but saw BGSU respond with a 3-0 run to go up 21-19. Head coach Colleen Munson called a timeout and the Broncos responded with a 6-0 run to end the set and the match.
