Women's Soccer Falls in MAC Quartefinals to Toledo, 2-1

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's soccer season came to an end as the Broncos lost 2-1 at the University of Toledo in the Mid-American Conference Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon.

Down 2-0, Alex Ruffer corralled a bouncing ball in the UT box and hammered it into the net for WMU, cutting the lead to 2-1 with 1:41 left in regulation. Western Michigan pressed with time running out and had a corner cleared out of the box with 10 seconds remaining to seal the win for the Rockets.

"It is unfortunate that we came to the end of such an amazing season today," said head coach Lauren Sinacola. "Not only amazing because of some great wins and fun times, but amazing in the sense of so many wonderful individuals that came together when times were tough. These players came out to training every single day and worked hard for each other. Things were tough for a stretch but this team stuck together and fought hard for one another. I'm proud of this team and all we have accomplished this year. Having things end sooner than we wanted only motivates us more moving forward.'

Toledo took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Sophie Pohl in the 16th minute after finishing off a corner kick by Chiara Paradiso.

WMU trailed early into the second half when Isa Echeverri was tackled in the box during another Rocket corner kick. Echeverri stepped up to the penalty spot and beat WMU keeper Stephanie Heber for the eventual game-winning goal.

Toledo outshot the Broncos 10-8 overall, with shots on goal tied at 5-5.

The loss marks the end of the careers for WMU's seven-member senior class. Ruffer, Heber, Kehndall Juhnke, Emma Kahn, Maria Jaramillo, Tiffany Buckler and Alyssa Smith go down in history as only the second class in program history to experience double-digit win seasons all four years.

"Thanks to all of our seniors for making this season unforgettable," added Sinacola. "They should be proud of their four years here and the legacy they have left. They are wonderful people and it has been a true honor coaching and getting to know them over the past four years."
