BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Western Michigan volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 23-25, 19-25) loss at Buffalo on Saturday night.
The Bulls hit .315 for the match and held the Broncos (12-7, 5-3 MAC) to a .199 hitting percentage. Senior middle blocker Sydney LeMay led WMU with 15 kills, while freshman outside hitter Rachel Bontrager had 13 kills and 12 digs for her second double-double of the weekend. Senior Olivia Kofie also reached double-digit kills. Buffalo's Polina Prokudina had a match-high 21 kills. Sophomore libero Kathleen Reilly had a match high 20 digs, while Mary Murphy had 39 assists for Western Michigan.
LeMay had six of her 15 kills in the first set to help the Broncos to a 25-23 win. WMU hit .238 and had 20 digs while taking a 1-0 lead. After some back-and-forth to open the se the Broncos went on a 5-1 run to take a 10-6 lead. WMU kept its lead until the Bills went on a 7-2 run to tie it up at 20-20. A UB kill by Kristina Nieves gave the home team a 22-21 lead but LeMay recorded three kills to finish out the set.
The second set start out close, with WMU taking an early 5-3 lead. Buffalo flipped things on the Broncos with a 6-2 run to take a 9-7 lead and never looked back. After a kill by WMU's Cassandra Smigiel to cut the lead to 12-10, UB responded with a 9-2 run to push its gap to 21-12 and win the set 25-16.
Buffalo took a slight 8-6 lead to start the third set, but WMU went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-8 lead of its own. The Bulls used a 5-2 run to tie it up at 13-13 and then jump to a 19-16 lead. The Broncos battled back to tie it up at 20-20 and again at 22-22 after a kill by Kofie. A service error gave UB a 23-22 lead but a kill by LeMay leveled it. The Broncos didn't get beyond the tie as kills by Prokudina and Scout McLerran gave the set to Buffalo.
In the final set the Bulls jumped out to a 4-1 lead and forced Western Michigan to chase the set. WMU was unable to get over the hump and fell 25-19.
Western Michigan returns home to host Kent State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Ohio on Saturday at 7 p.m.
