KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team saw its four-game win streak snapped as the team split its weekend series with No. 1 Denver after falling to the Pioneers 7-2 on Saturday night.
The Pioneers had seven different goal scorers and outshot the Broncos 31-26. Wade Allison and Matheson Iacopelli were the goal scorers for WMU.
Denver scored two power play goals in the first period to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Western Michigan responded early in the second period on Allison's 10th goal of the season at 1:14. During a spell of four-on-four hockey he skated up the right side of the ice and beat DU goalie Tanner Jaillet on his glove side. Colt Conrad also picked up an assist on the goal, his fifth of the season.
The Pioneers responded with a goal by Colin Staub, the eventual game-winner, at 3:27. Evan Ritt and Logan O'Conner added goals to put the Broncos down 5-1 heading into the third period.
Emil Romig and Kevin Conley pushed the lead to 7-1 before Iacopelli netted his team-best 15th goal of the season at 11:50 of the third period.
Western Michigan continues National Collegiate Hockey Conference play at home against Colorado College next Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.
