"Any road win is a good win and it wasn't a surprise that they were going to battle us to the end," head coach Shane Clipfell said, who coached at Eastern Michigan from 1999-2007. "Always feels good to come back here and see my lifelong friends, but it feels much better going to talk to those people after a win."
The Broncos got huge contributions from the starting lineup, who combined for 72 of the team's 76 points. Sophomore Breanna Mobley, who entered this game as the MAC's leading rebounder, continued to impress, finishing with a team-high 20 points and a career-high 18 rebounds for her eighth career double-double. She also added two blocks, a steal and went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. Redshirt junior Marley Hill finished with 19 points, continuing her streak of scoring in double-figures every game this season. Senior Meredith Shipman chipped in 17 points including three 3-pointers and recorded five steals. Sophomore Deja Wimby went for 16 points, six rebounds and four steals while junior Najee Smith did not score, but had career highs in both assists (6) and rebounds (8).
The first half went back-and-forth, with WMU holding a large lead of six points while EMU held a lead of five at one point. Shipman hit two straight 3-pointers for Western Michigan to end the first quarter with the Broncos leading 20-17. EMU started the second quarter on an 8-0 run, but WMU responded with an 8-2 run to come right back and end the half with a 33-30 lead and help the team improve their record to 11-0 when leading at the break.
WMU wasted no time in the second half, getting out to a double-digit lead using a 12-2 run that included three Shipman steals to open the third quarter. WMU outscored EMU 21-12 in the third quarter, but the Eagles made the game interesting in the fourth quarter, bringing the game within six with just over 2:00 to play. The Broncos were able to ice the game away from the free-throw line, where the team went 15-for-18 in the second half and 8-for-9 in the fourth quarter alone.
The Broncos out-rebounded the Eagles 44-37, improving the team to 10-0 when out-rebounding their opponent. Field-goal percentages were nearly identical, with EMU edging the Broncos 42.6 percent to 42.4 percent.
The Brown & Gold return home for one game against Kent State on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. before hitting the road for two straight at Akron and Ohio.
