KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan women's soccer team earned its first Mid-American Conference (MAC) victory of the season Friday, defeating Eastern Michigan 5-0 at the WMU Soccer Complex. After the win, the Broncos improve their record to 7-2-0 overall and 1-0 in the MAC.
Five different Broncos found the back of the net in the victory. Senior midfielder
Liz Abro and sophomore midfielder
Alyssa Burke both totaled three points in the match, scoring a goal and dishing out an assist apiece.
How it happened:
Western Michigan controlled possession for most of the first half. Forward
Emma Kahn had the first chance for the Broncos in the eighth minute. Forward
Mackenzie Barber delivered a striking ball across the front of the net. Kahn got her foot on it but the shot went over the bar.
The Broncos created another opportunity off a
Maria Jaramillo corner kick in the 18
th minute. The ball came sailing across the net dropping just inches away from the post but an Eastern Michigan defender was able to clear the ball out.
Following the half Western Michigan turned on the jets, scoring five goals in the final 45 minutes.
Barber got the Broncos on the board just two minutes into the second. In the 48
th minute, Kahn beat her defender sending a ball across the front of the net into Barber's feet. Barber buried her fourth goal of the season far post.
Western Michigan improved its lead in the 59
th minute. Abro and Burke played give-and-go past an Eastern Michigan defender. The senior captain, Abro, placed the ball past the Eagle goalkeeper tallying her second goal of the season and increasing the Bronco lead, 2-0.
Abro and Burke traded roles for WMU's third goal in the 62
nd minute, this time Abro setting up Burke. Burke's goal was her first of the season.
In the remaining minute and five seconds, the Broncos connected on two more goals. Sophomore
Alexis Shamoun recorded her second goal of the season in the 88
th minute with the assist coming from freshman
Erin Madigan. Freshman
Hannah Kahn answered just 50 seconds later scoring her first career goal for the Broncos.
Following the 5-0 victory, redshirt junior goalkeeper
Stephanie Heber was called upon to record a season high seven saves. Western Michigan outshot Eastern Michigan 15-11 while each team delivered seven corner kicks.
