STOCKTON, Calif.- The Western Michigan men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2016 season, falling at the University of the Pacific, 1-0, Sunday afternoon.
It was the second match of the weekend for WMU in California. The Broncos defeated St. Mary's 2-0 on Friday. With the result against Pacific, WMU's record moves to 5-1-0 on the year. Its was the third win in a row for the Tigers, who improved their record to 4-2-0.
"We came out way to casual today and we ended up paying the ultimate price for it," said WMU head coach
Chad Wiseman. "We're certainly not going under our opponents radar these days. It takes 90 complete minutes to win Division I soccer matches. Losing is never fun and should always sting at this level, but we will grow from this and be better next time out."
The Broncos gave up the lone goal of the match in the 21st minutes. The Tigers' Julio Cervantes delivered a nice cross into Anthony Orendain who was streaking down the right side and booted the ball in for the score.
Western Michigan tried to step up the pressure in the second half, taking nine shots and putting four on goal, while also earning five corners, but were unable to come up with a goal. WMU held the advantage on corners in the game, 9-1. Senior midfielder
Edu Jimenez led WMU with three shots on goal.
"We played a great second half we just could not break through on the scoreboard," Wiseman said. "You have to give much of the credit to Pacific, they played a great match, they're a good team.
"Leaving California 1-1 is not bad at all. Once we have time to reflect on our body of work out here, the men will realize it was a great trip, full of awesome experiences and two great college soccer matches."
Western Michigan returns to the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday, Sept. 18, for a 12 p.m. contest against Eastern Illinois over Alumni Weekend.
