Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan softball completed the sweep with a shutout of Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon on senior day at Fran Ebert Field. The Broncos finish the regular season 21-26 overall and 12-10 in the Mid-American Conference. Western Michigan has not dropped a game against EMU since 2011.
Seniors Melissa Palmer, Sabrina Gamboa, Allyson Kus and Caity Pixley were honored prior to their last home game for the Broncos in front of a large crowd. Multiple softball alumnae attended the game in support of the Broncos.
The Broncos will be the No. 5 seed in the MAC Tournament which takes place May 11-14th at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio. WMU will face No. 4 seed Northern Illinois on May 11th.
Senior pitcher Allyson Kus picked up her 15th win of the year and struck out four in five innings pitched. Freshman Jordan Kurth notched her first save after throwing two innings and striking out 5.
Senior Caity Pixley went 2-for-3, recording two RBIs and scoring a run.
Freshman Brook Wyman went 2-for-2 in the game and recorded two RBIs late in the game to extend the Broncos lead.
In the top of the second inning, Eastern Michigan's Wyman singled to left and stole second but Kus ended the inning with a strikeout and forcing a routine groundball. In the bottom of the third Brooke Wyman led the inning off with a walk for the Broncos, but WMU was unable to score.
The game was scoreless until the fourth when Pixley blasted the first pitch of the at-bat to right field which scored Erin Binkowski who reached on a fielder's choice and Gabby Schefka who reached on balls. The Broncos led the Eagles 2-0 after four.
Jordan Kurth came in to pitch in the sixth. Kurth promptly forced a groundball for the first out and then struck out the next two batters.
After a scoreless fifth, Freshman Jenna Faultersack laced a line drive to centerfield to start things off for the Brown and Gold. Pixley came through again for the Broncos getting a base hit to advance Faultersack to second. Pixley and Faultersack each stole to advance to 2nd and 3rd base and Wyman crushed a ball to right field after battling to a full count to pick up the RBIs. With the Broncos leading 4-0, Kurth headed to the circle for the final three outs.
Kurth secured the win and picked up the save for the Broncos by striking out the side in the top of the 7th.
The Broncos will head to Akron, Ohio early next week to prepare for the game against NIU in the MAC Tournament.
