Box Score 2 MUNCIE, Ind.- The Western Michigan softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader Friday at Ball State. The Cardinals slipped away with a 5-4, nine-inning win in game one and downed the Broncos 6-2 in game two.
Western Michigan will look to avoid a series sweep in game three tomorrow. First pitch has been bumped up to 9 a.m. from 1 p.m. due to inclement weather expected to hit the area.
Bronco sophomore center fielder
Aspen Williams hit a home run in each game for her first and second home runs of the season. Williams also had a double on the day, going 3-for-4 overall with three RBIs.
GAME ONEThe Broncos opened a 4-0 lead in game one before falling in extra innings.
Kelsea Cichocki hit a leadoff single in the fourth and scored on an RBI double by
Gabby Schefka. Schefka scored on a Ball State error. Williams went deep with a two-run home run in the sixth as WMU pulled ahead, 4-0.
Ball State tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. The Cardinals had four hits and WMU committed an error in the inning, resulting in three of the four runs being unearned.
Abby Stoner drew a two-out walk for WMU in the seventh and Williams hit a one-out double in the eighth but BSU pitcher Nicole Steinbach retired nine of the final 11 batters she faced.
Ball State pushed the winning run across in the bottom of the ninth. Madison Lee got on with a leadoff walk and scored on a two-out double down the right field line by Selena Reyna.
WMU senior pitcher
Allyson Kus (13-13) struck out a career-high 14 batters and allowed just two earned runs.
GAME TWOWestern Michigan also held a lead in game two, but the Cardinals rallied from a 2-1 deficit and went on to a 6-2 victory.
Ball State's Emily Dabkowski gave her team a 1-0 lead in the first with a sacrifice fly before the Broncos shot back with two runs in the third. Williams evened the score with a one-out solo home run to left center. With two outs away,
Melissa Palmer poked a two-out single down the left field line.
Sabrina Gamboa followed with a walk and
Kelsea Cichocki drove in Palmer with an RBI single to left field.
Dabkowski cracked what proved to be a game-winning two-run home run for Ball State in the bottom of the third. Leigh McAnally stretched the Cardinals' lead to 5-2 with a two-run single in the fourth and Lee hit a solo home run for Ball State's final run in the sixth.
Sophomore
Anissa Sanchez (1-4) started in the pitcher's circle for Western Michigan and went 3.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) in the loss. Freshman
Jordan Kurth finished the game and allowed one run.
Western Michigan will enter Saturday's game with a 18-25 overall, 9-9 MAC record while Ball State is 21-29 and 7-13 in the MAC.
