Jordan Kurth threw a complete-game shutout to lead Western Michigan to a 3-0 victory in game one and the Broncos fell in a close 2-1 contest in game two, splitting a doubleheader at Ohio
Saturday.
Kurth allowed just two hits hurling her third career complete game. She started off the game sitting down the Bobcats in order in the first inning. The first hit she allowed was a two-out single in the third. Kurth went on to retire the side in the fourth and fifth before being touched for a single in the bottom of the sixth. Kurth struck out five in the outing.
Offensively, sophomore catcher
Gabby Schefka led the way going 2-for-3 with a two-run double in the second.
Western Michigan tacked in its third run in the top of the third. Senior
Melissa Palmer hit a two-out single and then stole second. Junior
Kelsea Cichocki pushed Palmer across with a single to left center.
Senior shortstop
Sabrina Gamboa scored Western Michigan's only run in game two, hitting a home run for the second day in a row. Her long ball
Saturday came in the top of the seventh, a solo shot to center field. It was her fourth home run of the season and 19th career.
Both of Ohio's runs in game two came in the bottom of the first, the first of which was unearned after an infield error against the leadoff hitter.
Kurth also started game two in the pitcher's circle and went two innings before being replaced by senior
Allyson Kus. Kus threw four shutout innings. Kurth took the loss and her season record now stands a 3-4 adding a win and loss
