Softball Defeats Quinnipiac and IPFW

CLEARWATER, Fla.- Western Michigan softball (9-11) earned victories over Quinnipiac and Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne today at the USF Under Armour Invitational Series. The Broncos posted shutouts in both games, defeating Quinnipiac 5-0 and IPFW 4-0. WMU recorded a .429 batting average between both games and held Quinnipiac and IPFW to a combined .122 batting average. The Broncos pitching staff only allowed a combined six hits and two walks.

Junior Erin Binkowski hit a pair of home runs, one in each game and sophomore center fielder Aspen Williams went 5-for-6 on the day recording a .833 batting average that included a triple, two RBIs and a stolen base. Freshman Brooke Wyman, Junior Ivy Schaaf, Senior Kelsea Cichocki, Binkowski and Williams all batted .500 or better in the doubleheader.

Game 1: Quinnipiac

The Broncos recorded 15 hits in the game, while Senior Allyson Kus (6-5) earned the win pitching a complete game. Kus gave up only two hits, while striking out four and giving up one walk in the shutout.

The Broncos first run of the game came in the fourth inning. Binkowski started off the inning hitting a single to third base. Freshman Erin Barg came in to pinch run for Binkowski. Senior Shortstop Sabrina Gamboa bunted and advanced Barg to second. Barg stole third before Schaaf hit a base hit to score Barg.

In the sixth inning, with two outs Wyman doubled to left field and stole third. Sophomore catcher Gabby Schefka lined a double to center scoring Wyman from third. Freshman Jenna Faultersack pinch ran for Shefka and scored after senior Melissa Palmer drove her home. In the seventh inning Cichocki hit a single to left and Binkowksi hit a home run to left putting the Broncos ahead 5-0. 

Quinnipiac was able to get a runner on base in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to score.

Game 2: IPFW 

The Broncos recorded 11 hits and four runs against IPFW and earned their sixth win in Florida.

In the first inning, Junior Abby Stoner walked and Binkowski hit her second home run of the day to put the Broncos up 2-0. In the second inning, Schaaf walked followed by a Wyman single. Sleeman bunted advancing Schaaf and Wyman to second and third. With a full count Williams singled to right field, scoring Schaaf.

In the sixth inning, WMU added one more run on the day. Wyman doubled and Williams picked up her second RBI, while recording her fifth hit of the day.

Sophomore Anissa Sanchez (1-2) earned the win throwing four innings and allowing just two hits. Freshman Jordan Kurth (2-3) made the start for the Broncos and went three innings, giving up just one hit. 

The Broncos wrap-up their Florida trip tomorrow, WMU will face Iona at 9:15 a.m. in what will be the final game for the Brown and Gold in the USF Under Armour Series.
