NORMAL, Ill. – The Western Michigan gymnastics team took second place at the quad meet at Illinois State on Sunday afternoon. The Broncos were up against Michigan State, the eventual winner of the event along with host Illinois State and Wisconsin Stout.
Western Michigan scored 193.600, just a point and a half behind Michigan State which finished with a total of 195.100. The Broncos did feature an individual champion as Anna Corbett won the vault title again, making it the seventh time she has this season.
“We struggled on bars right off the top,” head coach Penny Jernigan said. “We fought our way through the next three events but it wasn't enough to overcome counting a fall on bars.”
For the fourth straight meet, the Broncos started the day on bars, scoring a 47.575. Jessie Peszek who was named MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week last week for her outstanding performance on bars vs. Central Michigan, scored a 9.825, the best of the day for the Broncos on bars and finished in a tie for third place among the 24 competitors.
Corbett scored a 9.825 on vault, giving her the top spot in the meet. She came into the meet ranked second in the MAC on vault with an average score of 9.814.
Other top performers on the day for Western Michigan included Rachel Binkley who scored a career-high 9.750 on vault, leading the Broncos to a score of 48.825 as a team in the event. Fellow freshman Rachel Underwood also had a strong meet, scoring at least a 9.675 or higher in her three events, including 9.825 on floor.
Western Michigan will embark on its longest roadtrip of the season next week when it heads to Pac 12 country for the final road regular season meet against the University of Washington next Saturday, March 5.
